Title        :  Dissecting Shp2 and cell signaling in health and diseases: 30 years' research

Abstract :

Dr. Feng's research program aims at understanding cross-talks and regulation of signaling pathways in different cell types in health and disease. This work was initiated by discovery of an SH2-containing tyrosine phosphatase Shp2 (originally called Syp) in my postdoc studies (Feng et al., Science, 1993). One current focus of the lab is on elucidating previously unrecognized complex mechanisms of liver development, disorders and cancer, especially the paradoxical anti-oncogenic effects of classical oncoproteins in hepatocarcinogenesis, which provide fresh views on liver cancer initiation and progression, and identifies novel targets for early detection and intervention of the malignant disease. By deciphering multi-faceted roles of the immune ecosystem, we are developing new thoughts and strategies for design of combinatorial liver cancer immunotherapy through coordinated activation of innate and adaptive immune cells. Our long-term goal is to provide novel diagnostic, preventive and therapeutic strategies for liver cancer patients.

Our research has been continuously supported by NIH since 1996. We have published 185 peer-reviewed articles, and we have shared key reagents and mouse lines with over 250 labs worldwide. I have presented research data and stories at >100 meetings and >150 seminars, and I have organized national/international meetings (including FASEB Summer Research and CSH-A Conferences).
