[May. 17] D5 Seminar- Dr. Takahiro Masuda (Kyushu University)

The "D5 Medical & Life Science Seminar" course will be offered by International Research Center for Medical Sciences (IRCMS). It will run from May 2022 to March 2023, with lectures given by scientists who are affiliated with IRCMS or in collaboration with researchers at IRCMS. The lectures will be given once a month, in English, and by leading scientists in the relevant research field. Students will be taught: 1) how normal physiological functions are maintained in the human body; 2) how these systems become abnormal under certain pathophysiologic conditions; 3) why stem cells are important in animal development and homeostasis; 4) how stem cell-based approaches can help us understand disease mechanisms and find potential cure for diseases related to stem cell malfunction (e.g., cancer, aging).

Title:       

Ontogeny and function of diverse brain macrophages



Abstract :

The central nervous system (CNS) host a variety of immune cells including macrophages, which come into two flavors: Microglia are found in the parenchyma, and CAN associated macrophages (CAMs) are located at the CNS interfaces such as meninges and perivascular spaces, where they carry out various functions during not only neural development and homeostasis, but in neurodegenerative and neuroinflammatory diseases. Recent emergence of single-cell technologies has enabled to reveal previously-unappreciated mechanisms for the development and maintenance of CNS macrophages, their heterogeneity and plasticity, and to identify the surprising context-dependent substates during disease. In this lecture, I would like to discuss the current knowledge about their origins, fates, and functional heterogeneity of CNS macrophages during development, homeostasis and perturbation.
