The Chemo-Sero-Therapeutic Research Institute (KAKETSUKEN) and Kumamoto University jointly established the Laboratory of Hematopoietic Stem Cell Engineering in IRCMS on April 1st, 2024. In this joint laboratory, we elucidate the mechanisms of how to induce self-renewal divisions for stem cell expansion in hematopoietic stem cells, which enables the generation of all types of blood cells. Moreover, based on knowledge obtained from basic research, we try to develop therapies using hematopoietic stem cells. Dr. Terumasa Umemoto entered into a Cross-Appointment Agreement with The Chemo-Sero-Therapeutic Research Institute on the same date. This joint research initiative represents a significant step towards understanding and harnessing the potential of hematopoietic stem cells for therapeutic applications.
