【IRCMS Internship】Ms. Asmin Mizrak (Middle East Technical University)

Name: Asmin Mizrak
            Middle East Technical University

Visiting Period: August 25th (Mon), 2025 - October 6th (Mon), 2025

Country: Turkey

Lab: Asai Lab

Q1. Summary of the internship (Description of the research conducted, aim, introduction of lab, and things you learned)

I stayed at the Asai Lab from August 25th 2025, to October 6th 2025, under the supervision of Professor Asai at IRCMS, Kumamoto University. During my stay, I worked on a developmental biology project focused on understanding the molecular mechanisms underlying left-right asymmetry during early embryogenesis. We aimed to investigate potential genes involved in establishing asymmetry and to examine their expression patterns during the early stages of chick embryo development. To achieve this, I performed molecular cloning using E. coli and synthesized RNA probes for in situ hybridization. Through these experiments, I learned fundamental techniques in developmental biology and molecular genetics, as well as how to plan and conduct research systematically.

Q2. What did this experience do for you with respect to your specific career development directions?

This internship was an important step in shaping my academic and career goals. It gave me the chance to work on real research and understand how experiments are planned and carried out in the laboratory. I learned to follow protocols carefully, perform complex techniques, and adjust procedures when needed, which improved my practical skills and problem-solving abilities. It also strengthened my interest in developmental biology and molecular genetics. I became more confident using laboratory techniques and discussing scientific ideas. The internship showed me the excitement and meaning of research, and it provided me with practical skills and a clearer vision for my future in science.

Q3. What did you enjoy about life at Kumamoto University (Kumamoto city or Japan)?

Life in Kumamoto was both enjoyable and full of new experiences. The people in the city were friendly and helpful, which made it easy to adapt to living in a different country. Outside the lab, I explored the city and enjoyed its history and culture. Visiting Kumamoto Castle, Mount Aso, and local temples helped me understand Japanese traditions and their beauty. I also tried local foods and other specialties, which was a fun part of the experience
