Dr. Ho, Pui Yu (Takizawa Lab) visited the Jeffrey Cheah Biomedical Centre, University of Cambridge on April 26th, 2023

The following report was written by Dr. Ho, Pui Yu (Takizawa Lab, IRCMS, Kumamoto University).

I had the opportunity to visit the Jeffrey Cheah Biomedical Centre, University of Cambridge on April 26th, 2023. This visit is to perform and learn the 10X genomics single-cell RNA-sequencing there to study HSC transplantation in humanised mouse model. Once I arrived UK, I was welcomed by the classical British weather - grey and rainy skies. Fortunately, it was the blossom season, so it was a joy watching the flowers while visiting those historical colleges in Cambridge. The Jeffrey Cheah Biomedical Centre is around 15 minutes away from city center by bus, located next to the Addenbrooke's Hospital. The Biomedical Centre is very well resourced with spacious laboratories and office rooms. Different kinds of seminars, including technical seminars by companies, and happy hours are held frequently to encourage researchers to learn and discuss science. As a famous international research centre, students and staff there come from different countries and cultural background. Various kinds of high-end equipment are also available in the Biomedical Centre with experienced technicians to support advanced experiments. During my 2-week visiting time, Dr. Elisa Laurenti from Dept. Hematology was very kind to host me and offer experiment support. I had the honour of participating in their lab meeting and had a fruitful discussion with them about my projects. I also had a chance talking with Dr. Hugo Bastos, a very skilful bioinformatician in Dr. Laurenti's team, to learn the fundamental knowledge of processing single-cell RNA-sequencing data. In summary, it is an amazing experience for me to visit the University of Cambridge and learn unique research culture and techniques there.
